Sparkle Skirts Review

I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz lately in online running groups about what to wear when you run.  I was kind of married to my Old Navy Active compression capris.  I have a really hard time finding something that doesn’t fall down on me and they were my best option.  I used a Running Buddy to carry my phone and the worked for the most part.  After over a year of listening to my cupcakes not just talk about, but RAVE about, Sparkle Skirts I began to wonder if I should give them a try.

There were a couple things that held me back initially.  They are a little pricey.  Definitely more than your Old Navy or Wal Mart capris.  The shorts worried me.  They claimed they didn’t ride up, but I had nightmares about the chaffing that would ensue from running in shorts.  Ok, those were really my only two concerns.  But they were big ones!

Then Sparkle Skirts had a sale with free shipping, and low and behold, I purchased my first skirt!  Tropical Breeze swing is so pretty and I just couldn’t resist.  So I stalked the mail and waited, not so patiently, for my new pretty to arrive in the mail.

Trying Tropical Breeze on right after it arrived!

When it did arrive I did some tests…jumping jacks, squats, etc to see if it would fall down and it stayed up through the test.  I wore it twice around town, to events where I was going to be outside in the FL heat and humidity, and was complimented on it, and comfortable throughout the events.  It was nice to be hands free and have my phone in my pocket.

Rocking Haunted on a recent run!

But the true test came on my first run.  I did have to pull the skirt up, but what I noticed is that with my short torso I really have to Steve Urkel my skirts and capris and then I don’t have as many issues with them falling down.  Once I solved that problem I knew I wouldn’t want to run in anything else!  I love my Sparkle Skirt!  I wear them with the kangeroo pouch in back where I put my phone so I can run my headphones up the back of my shirt.  (I really need to invest in a wireless headset for running!)  And guess what, I am now the proud owner of FOUR Sparkle Skirts so I have plenty to wear for my Wine & Dine Half, as well as my Glass Slipper Challenge training.  They are truly addicting!

My little collection!

My little collection!

One of the nice things is that Sparkle Skirts has a couple different styles you can choose from.  All of my pretties are the “Swing” style.  They also have “Hiker” which are two inches longer than the swing style.  They also have slim cut and vented slim so there are plenty of styles to choose from, and it gives you the opportunity to run in something that suites your body type best.  Oh, and they come in sizes XS to 3XL so there is one for everyone!

So, if you’re on the fence about whether or not to spend the money on a Sparkle Skirt, or whether they’re as great as everyone says they are, just bite the bullet it and get one!  Once you go Sparkle, you’ll never go back!

What I Wore Wednesday: Fuel and Hydrate Edition

Summer is upon us, and in Florida that means the temperatures are already heating up!  My last few runs have been pretty miserable for a number of reasons.  (More to come on that later.)  But the heat has me thinking that I need some options first and foremost to hydrate during my runs and second, to fuel during long runs.

I currently run with a Running Buddy pouch to hold my phone.  For the most part my Enchanted 10K training was during cooler weather so it was all I needed.  I love the Running Buddy for keeping my hands free while I run, and not having to wear the dreaded armband!  It holds my iPhone 5 great, but I did have some issues trying to stuff it too full during the Enchanted 10K and ended up holding it most of the race.  So for shorter runs where I don’t need a lot it’s great, but it doesn’t have any hydration options.  I’m contemplating getting a Nathan Speed Draw Insulated Flask to compliment the Running Buddy and provide me with much needed hydration in the FL heat and humidity while I run.

The question is whether this option, which seems great for my current training regimen, will be enough for the longer runs required for the half training.   I’ve been contemplating some kind of running belt.  I’ve heard great things about FlipBelts, SpiBelts and a Fitletic belt.  The problem is it’s hard to take the dive and make an investment in one of these options when you’re not sure if it will work for you.

If you run half marathons, or are training for one, what do you use to carry water/hydrate and fuel during your runs?  Through this novice girl a bone and share your wealth of knowledge with me by commenting below with what works for you and why you love it!

PHM medals

A while back I decided I was going to run at 5K at Disney.  This seemed like an insurmountable goal for a girl who could barely run a mile in high school, when I weighed a whole lot less.  Finding out I was pregnant pushed that goal back to 2015, as I knew I wouldn’t be ready to tackle this challenge right after having a baby.  Then I had a crazy thought…with all this time to train, why not run a 10K too?  Right?  Why not?  After all, it would be a good way to “lose the baby weight” and get back in shape.

It’s been a long road so far.  I started out with C25K, and have switched to the Jeff Galloway program.  It just fits my running style better.  Tomorrow I am to set out and run FIVE miles.  FIVE.  Just for fun.  I must be crazy!  But I am determined to accomplish this goal!

26f9328981b0a59fa47ba0f780ccee5fThis journey has not always been easy.  I have struggled through some runs.  I have struggled just to get out of bed some mornings.  What I’ve learned about myself though is that I am capable of so much more than I believe.  I honestly wasn’t sure that I could complete a 10K when I signed up, and I still have moments of doubt, but my head is in the game and I firmly believe that I will cross that finish line in February without being swept!

And the crazy thing is I just might continue running.  I may even have my eyes set on a half the next time.  Funny how one step and one goal can change us!

So here’s to running.  To earning bling.  To becoming a better me one stride at a time.

What I Wore Wednesday

This is a what I will wear edition as I’ve been contemplating my outfits for Princess Half Marathon weekend.  The 5K and 10K this weekend are my first races and in an effort to distract myself from my fear I’m dreaming up costumes to sport during the races.

Ariel is my favorite princess EVER so I want to dress as her.  At first I wanted to figure out something with the sailcloth, but not being a seamstress in any way, shape or form,  I think I am going to go with “Kiss the Girl” Ariel from the village tour with Prince Eric.  I found a cute running skirt on Etsy that I’ll wear with running tights and a black tank top.  (I’d love to fashion a black corset and white top if I get crafty.)  Thanks to Polyvore, I put together a cute example of my race costume for the Enchanted 10K.

Have you ever run in costume?  Do you have plans to dress up for any of the races Princess Half weekend?  Who do plan on dressing up as?
