Disney Savings Ideas

I hear a lot of comments from guests, friends, and maybe even my husband that Disney vacations can take a while to save for.  Being a military family I know we are on a budget and save for each vacation so we can pay cash for it and enjoy the holiday.  We recently started saving with two clever ideas we heard about.   Here are some easy Disney savings ideas you can jump on straight away to make your dream vacation a reality!

Recently I heard that if you fill a two liter soda bottle with dimes you’ll have saved $700.  I thought this was a great way to save some cash for trips.  Whether we use it for tips and spending money or put it towards our trip balance, how easy is it to stick your spare change in a liter bottle.  I even added a little vinyl to the bottle to spruce it up and identify what we’re using it for.  I’ll be honest we stuck a few pennies and nickels in there as well.  I’m curious to see how much we’ll have saved when it’s full!

My husband started this weekly savings plan where you put a certain amount away each week of the year.  As an alternative you could easily just do for 52 weeks starting now!  I’ve also had friends who do it in reverse so that the big amounts come out first instead of around the holidays.  You can also double the amounts and same even more!

52 Week Savings Challenge

Of course Disney has now jumped on board with their own savings account you can deposit money into and apply towards your vacation.  You can sign up here for your own account.

Top Six Reasons to Book Your 2015 Disney Cruise Now!

Recently on Facebook I mentioned that Disney Cruise Line has released their 2015 summer sailings, including amazing itineraries to the home of Disney’s “Frozen” – Norway!  2015 may seem far off, but here are six reasons to book your 2015 Disney Cruise today!

1.  First Choice Stateroom Category – Booking early ensures you get the stateroom category you desire!  Did you know that Disney Cruise Line has the fewest inside staterooms available to guests?   There are also limited staterooms that can sleep a family of 5.  These staterooms sell out quickly due to the lower costs of inside staterooms and the demand for both room types so it’s imperative to book early to secure the stateroom category you prefer.

2.  Best Pricing – Disney Cruise Line is most affordable when booked well in advance.  The closer  you get to the sailing the more expensive rates normally get.

3.  Included Value of a Disney Cruise – There are so many extras included in a Disney cruise.

  • One of the biggest included values is that ALL soda, coffee, tea and water are included.
  • And all the ice cream you can possibly eat!
  • Kids clubs are included for kids of all ages, including a special TWEEN club and TEEN club!
  • ALL dining options are included!  (Can you say no upcharge for filet or lobster????)
  • First Run Movies
  • 24-Hour Room Service (Seriously, room service is FREE!)
  • Adult Only Areas
  • Themed Parties like the famed Pirate Deck Party
  • Fireworks
  • Strollers, wagons and wheelchairs on Castaway Cay (first come, first serve)

4.  Adult Only Areas – When you think Disney you might think kids, but Disney provides ample adult only space onboard their ships and at Castaway Cay, their private island paradise.

5.  Castaway Cay – Disney’s private island in the Bahamas is the perfect place to relax or get active!  From the two family beaches, Pelican Plunge, BBQ, games and FREE Kids Clubs to the relaxing, adults only Serenity Beach with it’s hammocks, bar and BBQ Castaway Cay has everything for families and adults alike!  You can rent a cabana for the day, get a massage or run a FREE 5K!

6.  Pay a deposit now and the balance isn’t due until NEXT YEAR!  That’s right, for most summer sailings your deposit wouldn’t be due until next year!  Plus, you can make payments along the way as you count down to your cruise.

BONUS: Book your 2014 OR 2015 cruise by April 30th and receive a $40 onboard credit as my thank you to you!

What to Wear Wednesday – Disney Cruise Edition!

Once upon a time I would put together outfits, put on makeup, do my hair and head out for the day, or just to go to the market.  Along came kids and suddenly I was lucky to put on a clean shirt and yoga pants!  So when faced with a cruise I was totally conflicted on what to pack, but most importantly was left asking myself what to wear!  I’m sure I can’t be the only person asking this so to the best of my ability I’ve put together my key outfits for you to give you an idea of what to wear on your next cruise!

I sailed on the Disney Magic on a 3-Night Bahamian cruise with stops at Nassau, Bahamas and Disney’s private island Castaway Cay.

Day 1: Embarkation/Sail Away

For this day I wanted to be comfortable since I would be spending some time at the resort at Disney World for breakfast and a little shopping at Downtown Disney, but also quite a bit of time on a bus between the resort and Port Canaveral.  I settled on white pixie ankle pants from Old Navy and a sheer blue blouse with anchors over a white Old Navy tami.

Day 2: Nassau/Pirate Party

Since this was a training trip I had meetings in the morning, but planned to explore Nassau afterwards.  I wore gray, wide legged linen pants with a white top with crochet detail.  Super comfy!

For pirate night I switched into a modified pirate costume.  This was not my favorite outfit of the trip after having a baby two months prior, but it was worth being in the spirit of the evening!

Day 3: Castaway Cay

Can you say swimsuit and cover up?  Yep!  That’s what I wore during my day at the beach on Castaway Cay.  And no, there is no photographic evidence!  But the outfit I wore that evening was probably my favorite, and the most flattering.  I had purchased this dress last year for Easter.  I paired it with a turquoise belt and a Target cami.

Day 4: Debarkation

I realize I have zero pictures of this outfit, but I wore some ankle length jeans from Old Navy and an adorable Mickey Mouse shirt with a blue tank top underneath.  Comfy for the plane ride home and a nice reminder of my all too quick trip on the Magic.

In full disclosure, I really love theme outfits, parties, movie nights etc so I went a little crazy with Old Navy’s current nautical theme.  It was so convenient to do some one stop shopping and be ready to cruise!

Disney Family Movie Night – The Little Mermaid

We often joke about having PDD – Post Disney Depression in the Disney fan community.  So the question remains, how do you keep the magic coming at home?  I love planning themed Disney movie nights for my family.  I’ve done a few in the past that I am looking forward to sharing and will be planning more in the future as well.  Today I want to talk about our family movie night for The Little Mermaid!  (Which is my favorite Disney movie!)  I could not wait to share it with my boys!  (Yes, all of my boys actually enjoyed the movie!)

To start the night off I always make a menu to post for the kids.  They get a kick out of what’s on the menu, and sometimes in trying to figure out what certain items are!

Then we serve up dinner and settle in to watch our movie!

Once we’re done with dinner the kids get an extra special dessert normally!  This didn’t look as much like a boat as I’d hoped, but hey, they were tasty!IMG_0338You could even add in games and activities if you wanted.  (With a toddler there is only so much I can do, but I hope to incorporate games/activities beyond coloring sheets as he gets older!)

A Disney movie night is also a great way to surprise your kids with a trip to Disney!  Not to mention a fun way to “educate” kids on Disney classics prior to an upcoming trip!

Do you need help brainstorming a movie night and planning your next Disney vacation!  Looking for the perfect resort for your princess’ first Disney trip?  Whether you’d like to visit Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, Aulani or Adventures by Disney, I am here to help!  I love making magical memories one vacation at a time.  Contact me at or 818-519-0777 for more information on making your vacation dreams a reality!
